Instead of the United Nations?

It is clear from history of the UN over the last 20 or so years that it is incapable of dealing with critical international problems that only a credible international body can deal with. Rather than list all the failures of the UN or some of their successes, a new proposal is now presented.

It is time for a new international organization to be formed. It’s name would be the Union of Democratic Nations. Membership in this organization would require the satisfaction of a set of paramount conditions which the nation must meet:

1. National leaders to be freely elected by the people

2. The rule of law must be adhered to

3. The rights of individuals must be protected by the founding documents of the country/their constitution

4. The members must adhere to the principles of interaction with non-member nations.

5. Human rights must be guaranteed for all citizens

In order to recognize the fact the many nations are struggling to become democratic nations, a second class of memberships would be established. Membership in this group would depend upon a measure of their progress toward democratic government.

Those nations not in the membership will not be availed of privileges of membership.

So what would be the privilege of membership?

First an observation: Democratic nations do not war with one another. They solve their problems be other means.

So clearly the primary benefit of membership in the UDN is that you can trust other members not to war against you.

Members will benefit from the following which non-members will be denied.

1. Economic cooperation

2. Free trade

3. Open borders

4. Shared military

5. Shared intelligence

6. Shared scientific and technical information

7. Shared boarder security

8. .....

You get the idea. Members of UDN agree to shun interaction with non-members on any potential benefit to them unless they can offer something of great value (to all members).

So what happens when non-members threaten first and second class members? Ahah!!!! Now you get the idea. All members are now duty bound to support the military action necessary to defeat the totalitarian non-members. I suspect there are more conventional weapons, missiles, nuclear weapons on our side than theirs. This would lead to our destruction of them and their people. What? Their people? Who says they are people belonging to the totalitarians? Thus we have a duty to free them not nuke them. Time for more strategizing.

Somehow there needs to be a strategy that infiltrates these despotic societies and stimulates the people to take control of their destiny. Maybe technology can help.

What if a satellite ISP were easily accessible to remote communities which have somehow gained access to the internet. If such access was so ubiquitous that anyone could hide one, then the oppressed might realize that the whole world, especially the democratic, world has great attraction. Hmmmm.
